Diameter becoming the principal connectivity protocol
In next generation broadband networks, it is fundamental that products support Diameter interfacing as soon as possible. In the next few years more and more operators will adopt to all-IP networks, which means control signaling will migrate to Diameter. This protocol will be necessary for nearly any system in an all-IP network, as it provides authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) functionality, as well the required connectivity and interfacing for many key broadband systems in the Data and Control plane. Furthermore Diameter enables the exchange of information between network operators (for roaming purposes).
Disadvantages of the traditional Diameter stack approach
Adding Diameter to existing products results in costly, time- and resource-consuming development projects. Integrating a Diameter stack often requires significant changes on the core product and requires expertise and resources which are only limitedly available in most organizations. And this is not where it stops. Once a stack is integrated and operational, the flexibility to support different Diameter applications, releases and (vendor-specific) variants is generally very limited, which leads to additional development and customization work. As a consequence, Diameter stack integration projects distract vendors from delivering the core product functionality that is required to win business and remain competitive.
